Swimwear options to a J cup: big splash or damp squib?

Bravissimo Bikinis J cup

Every woman deserves decent, well fitting lingerie: and for me that includes swimwear and sportswear. It is impossible to underestimate the impact negative body image and a lifetime of inadequate bras has on girls and their willingness and ability to engage in an active lifestyle. Every woman deserves to feel unencumbered by her own body, and free and comfortable enough to take part in everything she wishes to.

With things seeming to improve by the month in the UK now, we’ve reached a point where any swimwear or lingerie brand worth mentioning caters for G-cups as a standard. This is miles away from where we were two years ago, and it makes me feel optimistic for a future where G+ and 30- become common as a 34B.

But for now, beyond G things are still a bit patchy (come on, keep up retailers…). So in a bid to help a Twitter friend, I went on a mission. What swimwear options does a girl have at J cup?

Bravissimo is, as ever, high street queen. Three styles and five options up to a K cup is an encouraging start – though the options do veer towards the basic. The simple black Panache Anna (above left) is a good staple (and also comes in tankini and swimsuit styles if you prefer more coverage), and the Sun Seeker bikinis by Bravissimo (above centre) give you a couple of colour options if you prefer something a bit more summery. I love thePanache Loren (above right), and have already drooled wistfully over it on these pages, and here it really stands out as an exciting print option in a sea of block colour.

Figleaves Swimwear J Cup

Figleaves also don’t disappoint, also stocking the Panache Anna (in black as well as a beautiful teal colour) and the Panache Loren, as well as the stylish Panache Mae. Most exciting though, are these a-mazing Fantasie swimsuits (Ibiza (centre) and Buenos Aires (right)) up to a J cup. At £70 they’re not the cheapest option, but they are beautiful and selling out faster than the speed of light. Get in quick if you want to snap one up.

Freya Swimwear HH cup Mirage and Eden

Disappointingly, favourites Freya are unusually behind here, and are yet to have hit the J cup in their swimwear ranges. That said, I spotted a few cracking HH cup balconettes on on their site so they’re heading in the right direction – the Mirage (left) has been one of my favourites all season, and this brand new Eden (left) is being released next month. Freya also tends to come up slightly big in the cup, so it may well be investigating even if it isn’t what you consider your ‘true’ size.

And there we have it. Granted, it’s not the overwhelming bumper selection those of us G and below have enjoyed this year. But it’s better than last year, and hopefully will keep improving on that trajectory. The days of J cup being considered an unusual size and being under-represented in lingerie ranges are numbered. Come on retailers: G is just the beginning!

Clothes for curves: London

Pepperberry Dresses

Following my piece on Germany’s amazing Busenfreundinnen, a German reader struggling to find clothes for her curves – a problem we can all relate to – asked if I knew of any good shops in London she could stock up in when she visits in a couple of months.

It occurred to me that, though Whistles cut dresses generously for curves, and though Gap make t-shirts stretchy enough to fit a 13″ difference between bust and waist, aside from Bravissimo’s own range (now Pepperberry), I can’t actually think of any other stores specifically catering for busty women.

Even a shout out to the ever trusty Boob Force on Twitter couldn’t uncover a couple of gems, which is a poor show for one of the shopping capitals of the world. But on the upside, the launch of Pepperberry has expanded Bravissimo’s clothing range exponentially. The website is absolutely stuffed full of clothes, a much wider (and even lovelier) selection than they launched with. All three of the above are great little summer dresses, and at around £50 for a dress that will fit your boobs without relying on a belt (never the most comfortable thing on a searingly hot day) they’re pretty good value too. The website currently boasts 33 styles, a complete mixture of smart, casual, pretty and work friendly to suit everyone.

But Pepperberry does not stop at dresses. You can also find coats, suits, tops, cardigans, skirts, trousers AND accessories now – basics and fashion pieces alike. I’d say that some of it feels a bit ‘older’ than I would wear – but that just means they’re doing a great job of catering for a broad spectrum of tastes and demographics. And the pieces that I do like, I love: I’ve been looking for that boyfriend cardigan for ages, that skirt would be perfect for a French bicycle jaunt I’m planning (are the baguettes included?), and that architectural cuff is just stunning and ridiculously good value at £14. They’ve managed to create a stylish but generously tailored mac, and their selection of tops and shirts goes on for three pages. I’m heading back to the UK in under a month myself. I suspect a visit to Pepperberry will be high up on my list…

Pepperberry Clothing

The new Pepperberry store in London is in the heart of the shopping district, not far from Oxford Circus station. Check it out!

Catching 40 zees with 32Gs: sleep support for big boobs

Tweet Tweet

Two days ago, I wrote ‘regular lie-ins’ in to my long term financial plan (true story). I am evangelistic about the importance of allowing yourself enough rest, and I have every sympathy for anyone who is missing out – not least those missing out because their bountiful bountiful bosoms are causing them discomfort.

So when on a lovely follower on Twitter asked if I could recommend something to stop her boobs from aching in the morning, I put the challenge out to the Boob Force. With the collective might of their brains, they quickly came up with a few solutions.

So what can you do if your breasts are keeping you up?

If your boobs are uncomfortable and squishing together in your sleep, something like a Kush can help you, especially if you sleep on your side: thousands of women swear by them. That said, you probably need a much greater sense of humour about what you look like at bedtime than I have, because sexy they are not…

Kush Sleeping Support

If you’re not open to trying a Kush in the bedroom, then take a look at Freya’s ever-expanding lounge collection.  There are lots of ‘secret-support’ brands out there, but Freya take their bra styles and prints and reinvent them with a sleepwear twist: putting cute Freya prints and style in to pyjamas and nighties. I’ve not tried them yet, but am hearing good things and looking forward to giving them a go. For some reason, they make me think of truth-or-dare and pillow fights…

Freya Lounge

But for total support? You could also stop your breasts squishing together or escaping under your arms with a soft cup bra. There are quite a few of them about, and you can pick up three styles and a good range of sizes just in Bravissimo alone. One of them- the Panache Sophie – is really pretty, and with matching knickers it feels as ‘designed’ as a stylish underwired bra. Also recommended were Freya Polyanna, Anita.com, and the pretty Fantasie Gabrielle. They’ll hold you in place without digging in or making you wake up feeling bruised. I sleep naked (apologies for the visual there), but I’m actually thinking of getting a few just for bumming around the house in. That, and perhaps the occasional nap too…

Speaking of fashionable ladies’ nightwear, can someone invent the soft secret support onesie?

Bravissimo Soft Cup BrasThank you to everyone who helped! Until next time, Boob Force! x

A challenge to Debenhams…

Debenhams Bra Fitting CampaignMuch has been written about Debenhams’ latest campaign, declaring war on ill-fitting bras by offering £5 off vouchers in exchange for a fitting.

On one hand, I’m happy that high-profile stores like Debenhams are investing in bra-fitting awareness. On the other though, I can’t help but grimace. The press release blames endemically bad fit on women being embarrassed about the fit experience, but I simply don’t think that’s the case. More likely the sad truth is this: for years the prominent and supposedly reliable businesses we’ve trusted to fit us correctly have simply been getting it wrong.

That “85% of women are wearing the wrong sized bra” statistic hasn’t changed in all the years I’ve been busting for justice, so I almost feel as if – if bra fitting accuracy is plateauing at this pitiful percent – the large high street fitters seeking to raise their profile with campaigns like this should take responsibility for some of it. How can we trust them to get it right now when they don’t appear to be admitting there was ever a problem?

That said, I do believe that everyone deserves a second chance. I’ve had some positive fitting experiences at Debenhams, and the more money, time and effort they can spend on raising bra fit awareness the better. But I would like to extend them a little challenge:

Will you show us your figures?

It’s one thing to generate a few headlines and extra sales with an eye-grabbing statistic. It’s quite another to follow through and commit to making difference to it. Busts 4 Justice would like to challenge Debenhams to record their refitting throughout this campaign, as Bravissimo do. Not only will it generate more accurate idea of what an ‘average’ size might be, but it will prove the sincerity of the mission and quantify just how many women are being helped. It’s a tiny gesture, but by opening themselves up in this way it would prove a commitment and a certain accountability to the cause that would really set Debenhams apart from the pretenders…

What do you reckon, Debenhams? You up for it?
