Desert Island Frisks

With B4J HQ relocating to Europe and the cat taking up most of the space in the car, I’ve had to do some serious thinking about my lingerie collection.  With most of my clothes being shipped, which of my bras could I stand to be parted with for for four to six weeks?  Stranded on a desert island (or worse, notoriously rubbish-for-big-boobs continental Europe), which bras would keep me going until my rescue?

I had to wrestle my bra selection down to five, a challenge that made me realise that my lingerie habit is very much at odds with my general beliefs about sustainability and consumerism.  No matter: everyone is allowed one weakness…

First in went my Freya Active (above centre): I love running too much to miss it for any amount of time, and it is simply impossible without the structural support of my sports bra.  My Freya Deco (above left) gets to come along for those days I need an eye-popping cleavage to distract from my terrible grasp of Dutch.  I wanted my Wonderbra Ultimate Strapless for versatility, but it is simply too big for my bag and is shipped by default.  Instead, I replaced it with my coral Freya Jolie to break up the black a little bit.  Holding on to my bikini (also Freya – I’m noticing a pattern) was a bit of a gamble, taking a coveted place from a prettier bra.  But while I’m not sure how many immediate freshwater swimming opportunities there will be in the Netherlands, I’ll be damned if I’m going to miss out on any due to lack of kit.  A solid selection, I think, even if it does betray my serious Freya habit…

And my final choice?  Bra superstar, the Panache Tango plunge (above right).  Whilst it’s not the most beautiful, it is the most comfortable bra I have ever worn.  It gives a wonderfully supported silhouette without any, er, thrust, which makes it great under clothes.  A fantastic basic, though it could definitely benefit from a short option in the matching bottoms range.  I would be a constantly mismatched if comfortable castaway if it were the only bra I had.

This whole exercise really has proved that as much as I love variety, comfort and fit are still the most important factors for me in loving my underwear.  Though I will miss the colours and patterns and styles as they take the long route to Amsterdam, I think G-Unit will get by.  Of course, there’s every chance that in the meantime Europe will surprise me with incredible well stocked lingerie boutiques… As if I needed an excuse.

What would your top five be?

More 2011 swimwear: Panache

The 15% off swimwear offer at Lembrassa today reminded me how much I loved Panache’s swimwear last year, especially the gorgeous Monroe range (still available in some sizes from Lembrassa and Belle Lingerie… go go go!), so I thought I’d have a peek at what they’ve been up to this year.

While I don’t think anything rivals the Monroe for its perfectly pitched seaside vibe, the Lucille (above left) is similar in its retro appeal and the candy stripes are as summery as ice cream with strawberry syrup.

Thinking of the irreplaceable Elizabeth Taylor this week has made me long for some Hollywood glamour, and this Mae bandeau swimsuit demands to be worn with an enormous pair of shades, immaculate hair and a champagne cocktail from a deco saucer.  It comes with detachable straps too, for those of us who need a little help with our elegance…

I’m not blown away by the rest of their ranges, but these are two great additions to my increasingly long swimwear wish list for this summer.  Unless I can find myself a boathouse in the south of France to justify them all, I think I need to start narrowing it down…

Olay etched in B4J’s Bad Books

We interrupt our normal broadcast to tell you that international wrinkle oppressors Olay have hit a new low with their latest advertising campaign.

“Not ready to take drastic measures for firmer skin yet?” coos the voiceover, whilst an unknown doctor examines an indeterminably aged woman’s immobile face for signs of insubordination ageing.

I know it’s fairly standard for beauty advertising to make women feel horrible and inadequate in order to sell them products which at best do very little.  But it has to be a new low when they start referring to plastic surgery as if it were inevitable.  When did ‘growing old gracefully’ stop being the norm?  Stop being preferable to mutilating our own faces?

The image above (genuine Olay material from the Boots website) proves how far removed Olay are from any reality of what women look like.  That poor woman has been airbrushed so much she resembles one of those eerie waxworks from a knock-off eastern European Madame Tussauds.  Unfortunately, its ridiculousness makes it no less harmful.  Olay’s has always been one of the loudest voices in clamouring chorus demanding women waste increasing amounts of their time, money and energy defying the laws of physics on their faces.  This crap has been holding us back for years.  Enough is enough.

Olay, I reject your vision of the future, and hope that as I grow older I have the confidence to wear my lines as badges of honour: proof that I lived, loved, achieved and aged outside of an hermetically sealed pod.  Ladies, let’s boycott!

Every Body Loves Lingerie

We live in a world that idiolises smallness in women, but the lingerie industry does a spectacular job of ostracising those of us who are petite. Whether you’re narrow backed (which could mean anything under a size 12 in real terms) or small breasted, as far as most lingerie retailers are concerned you either don’t exist or you are a child.

Small Bust, Big Heart’s ‘Every Body Loves Lingerie’ campaign demands better for small breasted women usually forgotten by lingerie retailers.  SBBH argue that every woman deserves to feel good about their body, and Busts 4 Justice couldn’t agree more.  Far too much female potential is wasted whilst worrying about the way we look and whether or not we conform to an ideal.  There is no right or wrong shape (there is no ‘real’ either – all women are real: size or lack of it has nothing to do with reality, existence or gender credentials *climbs off soap box*), and we all have a right to feel good about the completely random hand our genetics dealt us.

If you’d like to support Every Body Loves Lingerie, find out how you can get involved by visiting their site. Good luck ladies!

Star in a Bra Top 30 Announced

Curvy Kate’s shortlist has been announced, with 30 gorgeous girls each vying for your votes to be crowned 2011’s Star in a Bra.

The girls come in all sizes but only one shape: curvy.  Busts 4 Justice are especially pleased to see lots of 28/30 backs too; proving above all that these elusive petite back sizes are not a myth, are not uncommon, and are not only the preserve of the rakishly thin.  Let’s hope bra retailers are paying attention…

Vote for your three favourite girls to go through to the final here.  Good luck! x
